MASSAGE TECHNIQUES

Massage is the oldest physical medicine of all. It dates back 5,000 years, when it was used in China. The Greeks and Romans knew a lot about human anatomy and were great believers in the therapeutic healing power of massage.

  • Aromatherapy Massage
    • This treatment is a massage using blended pure essential oils from plants, flowers, fruits and trees. Oils are blended to suit individual requirements and are gently massaged into the skin. Aromatherapy is a relaxing treatment, which may benefit stress, insomnia and muscular aches and pains.

  • Swedish Body Massage
    • A technique, which was developed by Per Henrik Ling born in 1776 in Sweden. He developed this massage technique using his training skills in gymnastics along with skills he has learnt in China.
    • Swedish body massage involves gentle effleurage strokes to warm up the body at the beginning of a treatment and to warm down at the end; Petrissage which involves squeezing and kneading the muscles; Superficial skin strokes; and Percussion movements which stimulate the body.
    • Generally plain base oil or talcum powder is applied to aid the flow of massage as opposed to essential oils used in Aromatherapy massage.  However some masseurs choose to use a ready mixed blend of aromatherapy oils to enhance the feeling of well-being.
    • Sometimes called Remedial or Therapeutic massage this massage is easily adapted to the individual need and can be used on anyone from 9yrs to 99yrs.
    • The amount of pressure used varies greatly depending upon the condition being treated.  It can be used to relax and de-stress or to relieve pain and stiffness.
    • It is often used in conjunction with other therapies such as Chiropractic or Physiotherapy.

  • Sports Therapy (Sports Massage) is evolved from Swedish Massage and is a deeper treatment for specific injuries.  Similar to Physiotherapy this treatment may involve exercise or the use of intrasound and other machines.  The massage involves firm movement and strokes to work deeper into the muscles and tissues.

  • Deep Tissue Massage
    • A massage technique, which focuses on the deeper layer of muscle tissue. It is useful to aid the release of chronic muscle tension. The technique involves a combination of slower strokes, gentle stretches and direct deep pressure or friction's across the grain of the muscle. It may be useful helping to break down and eliminate scar tissue
    • Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific large muscle area. Generally plain carrier oil is used to aid massage, however, essential oils can be incorporated depending of the specific complaint
    • This particular type of massage may help you with specific aches, pains and long term muscular problems, leaving you feeling relaxed and invigorated
