THERMO-AURICULAR
THERAPY (Hopi Ear Candles)
This ancient and natural
therapy has been passed down through many centuries and civilisations.
We are told that the ancient Greeks, Mediterranean people and
South Americans all regularly used the ear candles for cleansing,
purifying and healing on a spiritual level.
Much later the amazing
efficiency of the candles on a physical level was recorded. It
is however through the Native American Hopi tribe and their practice
of the ear candle treatment that is has reached the rest of the
world.
The word Hopi means,
people of peace. The Hopi's were the settled Pueblo Indians of
the North American continent and they have lived in harmony with
nature and mother earth for centuries. The remaining Hopi people
are rapidly gaining respect for their extensive knowledge and
great spirituality.
Ear candles have been
traditionally used by Shaman healers and ancient wall paintings
in the Grand Canyon show their importance to these cultures during
rituals and healing ceremonies.
CANDLES
Each ear candle is
an all-natural product measuring approx. 20 cm in length, with
a burning length of approx. 14cm and a filter at the lower end.
Even today each candle is handcrafted and constructed to a traditional
formula containing a synergistic blend of herbs and oils. The
blend includes Flax (organically grown cotton), Honey, Beeswax,
Beta-carotene, Camomile, Sage, Hypericum and St Johns Wort. All
these ingredients when burned provide soothing, antiseptic, analgesic,
anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
The candles used now
are made in Germany by Biosun and are made from the highest
quality ingredients and are regularly tested in a laboratory in
Germany. They are free of all chemical, pesticide and fungicide
residues and carry the prestigious CE mark (93/42-EEC) for medical
devices in Europe. No other ear candles meet this level of certification.
HOW THEY WORK
The candles work on
a chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where
they may gently be removed. They equalise the pressure in the
head and ears thus making them suitable for many conditions. Many
people describe this as a relieved, lighter feeling in the head
and ears.
A light suction action
(chimney effect) of the burning process and the movement of the
flame creates a vibration of air in the candle, generating a massage-like
effect on the ear drum. In addition, the pressure flow circulates
a vapour containing herb extracts inside the ear. This effectively
stimulates peripheral blood circulation, thus stimulating the
immune system and strengthening the circulation and cleansing
of the lymph glands. Secretion flow is gently stimulated and the
vapour collects and removes impurities or deposits. Most of these
are carried away through the candle (chimney) but some can often
be found as deposits in the condensed candle wax residue after
removal from the ear. Deposits can commonly work their way to
the surface up to 24-48 hours later.
TREATMENT
A treatment takes
approximately 1 hour and can be done seated or lying, with the
head turned comfortably and supported so that the ear being treated
is facing the ceiling. The unlit candle is then gently placed
in the outer ear to ensure the comfort for the client. Once this
has been established the candle is removed, lit and then replaced
in the ear.
A pleasant, faint
crackling or rustling sound will be experienced during this relaxing
and enjoyable non-invasive therapy. Children invariably are fascinated
by the whole concept and love to give their own description of
what they can hear. They very quickly settle and become calmer
and more relaxed.
The burning time of
each candle varies with each ear and with each individual and
the condition being treated. It is usually between 10 and 15 minutes.
During this time you will listen to gentle music which is to aid
relaxation and the healing process. After both candles have been
burned the treatment is concluded with a gentle face massage especially
around the lymph tracts, above and below the ears incorporating
pressure points corresponding to other parts of the anatomy.
