CHIROPRACTIC

CHIROPRACTIC AND YOU

Back pain is one of the most common  conditions in the UK, causing nearly 5 million lost working days each year.  The causes are many and include sitting, bending and lifting at work, leisure  activities,  housework, sports, bad beds and chairs.

The human spine is a complex structure principally involving 24 individual bones, or vertebrae.  Movement of the spine happens at the discs and joints between these bones. Nerves coming from the spinal cord leave the spine, one on each side and at each level, between the disc and joints, which is why the nerves often become affected.  It is these nerves which pass information throughout the body to and from the brain.

All these moving parts can experience   problems - the muscles supporting the spine become tired or pulled/strained, the ligaments holding the bones together can also be strained and the joints and discs gradually become worn.

Pain  anywhere is your body’s way of telling you there is a problem that needs attention.  Problems in one area can have a knock-on effect, causing conditions such as  headaches, shoulder, arm or leg pain. Most mechanical problems affecting muscles, nerves, bones and joints - the neuro-musculo-skeletal system - can be helped with chiropractic treatment and      advice.

During the initial consultation the chiropractor  will take a detailed history of the problem/s you have, your general health, accidents, injuries and family history.  An examination is also carried out to help determine the cause/s of your problem/s

Treatment, unless it is appropriate to refer for further investigation, such as x-rays, can then begin. This often involves ‘adjusting’ the joints to improve their function.  This in turn helps the body to  recover naturally and more quickly than if left without help and decreases the pain, stiffness, inflammation and nerve irritation.

Further appointments are usually necessary to keep recovery on the right track and to  re-educate the system.  This helps to avoid problems and recurrences in the future.  The number and frequency of treatments is  tailored to the individual    patients needs - ’if you need it, you get it, if you don’t, you won’t’
