Aromatherapy is the
therapeutic use of essential oils, obtained from plants, flowers,
trees, fruit and aromatic shrubs. It is an ancient art which dates
back thousands of years. The true founders of aromatherapy were
the ancient Egyptians. They used aromatics in rituals, healing,
including different forms of massage, cosmetics and embalming.
Essential oils are
extracted by using different methods. The classic method is steam
distillation, other methods include expression, which is mainly
used on citrus fruits, enfluerage and maceration. The molecules
of essential oil are so fine that it enables the oils to pass
through the skin into the bloodstream.
The essential oils
are blended after a full consultation to suit individual needs,
they are then mixed with carrier oil. The oils are gently massaged
into the skin. Aromatherapy massage depending on the oils used
can be relaxing or uplifting; it is a useful treatment for stress,
insomnia, muscular aches and pains, anxiety, skin problems, and
as an aid to maintain the body's general wellbeing.
