Hot Stones Massage is a speciality massage that uses smooth, heated, basalt stones. Basalt is volcanic rock with excellent heat retention properties: it is formed from the hot lava that spills out of the volcano as it erupts. Perfect for stone therapy.
A massage using hot stones is a completely nurturing and holistic treatment using stones of varying sizes on different parts of the body, from the forehead to between the toes. The heat from the stones relaxes the body and encourages increasing blood flow to the area being worked on, which further accelerates the healing process. The direct heat relaxes muscles, allowing manipulation of a greater intensity than with regular massage. Hot Stone massage therapy allows mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing.
Before the client arrives the massage therapist sanitises the stones and heats them in water of 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. The water will be changed and the stones thoroughly cleansed for every client. Ti-tree essential oil is often added to the water for its antibacterial qualities.
Prior to treatment the therapist will carry out a confidential consultation and assessment of the client’s needs.
I use very fine single-use pre-sterilised needles to stimulate specific acupuncture points on your body. Because energy meridians range across the whole body, the points used are not necessarily close to where you experience pain or discomfort. Many commonly used acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs, so it is helpful to wear clothing that allows easy access to these areas. Also try not to come for treatment on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal.
The treatment begins with the client lying on a couch and flat, hot stones covered by a thick towel, will be placed on either side of the spine. While these placement stones are delivering concentrated centres of heat, the therapist proceeds to massage the client with oiled stones. The massage is deep as heat penetrates the body and relaxes the muscles. The stones can also be placed in the palms of the hands and between the toes.
The therapist handles the stones before putting them onto the client’s body, to ensure they are at the correct temperature. If they feel too hot for the client, then the temperature will be reduced.
A Hot Stones massage offers relief from the following symptoms:
• Muscular aches, pains, sprains and strains
• Poor circulation
• Rheumatic and arthritic conditions
• Back pain
• Stress, anxiety and tension
• Insomnia
• Sinus problems
A Hot Stones massage can be an effective, positive treatment for the nervous system. Stress and tension are the root causes of many illnesses, when tension is alleviated, the body quickly returns to its natural state of wellbeing, promoting a sense of peace and balance, allowing the body to begin self healing.
Towards the end of the massage crystals may be laid on the Chakra points (energy centres of the body) to complete the holistic treatment, restoring harmony and flow of energy around the body.
Essential oils can be incorporated into the Hot Stones massage treatment if requested by the client.
